A tighter medication policy will be in place when students return to Natrona County schools on Monday.

The revised policy now requires that students have a note from a legal guardian and a physician before any type of medicine can be furnished by school nurses or officials.

Mark Mathern, the Natrona County School District’s associate superintendent for curriculum and instruction, said the revisions were needed to better protect students and to remove confusion.

“We would not give anything on a doctor’s orders that a parent wouldn’t agree with, but it does not work the other way around,” Mathern said. “We can’t have a parent saying to give a Tylenol, a doctor saying to give some other type of drug and then have the parent switch the medication.”

Under the amended policy, school officials will not furnish any type of medication unless both notes are on file. While under the previous policy, schools needed either a note from the parent or the doctor.

The policy applies to all prescription drugs, vitamins and over-the-counter drugs like Aspirin and Pepto-Bismol.
