Casper Fire-EMS extinguished a small fire that started in the composting area of the Casper Landfill on Sunday morning, a department spokesman said.

The department responded to a call about 11:30 a.m. and crews were able to put it out in about 20 minutes, public information officer Justin Smith said.

The fire started in the area where people drop off grass clippings for composting, he said.

The department was on scene for about an hour, Smith said.

Crews at the landfill will monitor the situation for the next three days by constantly turning the yard waste and pouring water on it, he said.

In October 2014, sparks from a fire at the landfill blew east and set a blaze that burned over 9,500 acres in the Cole Creek Subdivision.
