Fort Caspar Museum has opened a new exhibit focusing on fur: "Wearable Wyoming: Fur as Fashion." It will be on view November 28th thru November 2016.

Before the invention of such high-tech materials as Gore-Tex and Thinsulate, people relied on clothing made from animal fur to keep them warm during the harsh winters of Wyoming. Yet after it was a necessity, furs and fur-trimmed clothing became a mark of social status. Our curators have gone deep into collections storage to find a wide array of rarely-seen items made with fur.

This exhibit examines many of the different kinds of animals used for various winter fashions over the years. From functional to frivolous, on display will be coats, shoes, hats, muffs, and stoles made from fox, mink, ermine, rabbit, coyote, bear, bison, and beaver, as well as examples of faux (or "fake") fur. The exhibit will also include a touch section where visitors may feel examples of animal furs and gauge their different qualities.

Fort Caspar Museum's winter hours are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, Tuesdays through Saturdays. Admission prices are $1.50 for adults; $1.00 for youth (ages 13-18 years); and FREE for children (12 years and younger).
