Joey + Rory singer Joey Feek knows that she is in the final stage of her life, and she's determined to leave her family with as much of her legacy as she can before she goes.

"As Joey has had to learn to come to terms with what is happening to her body and what the future holds, it's been important to her to share some things that she wants me and our girls to remember after she's gone," Rory tells People.

Joey was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer in June of 2015, and after an arduous battle, she decided to discontinue her treatments after doctors told her there was nothing more they could do. She is in hospice care in her hometown of Alexandria, Ind. as she faces the end of her life, surrounded by her family and friends.

Rory says he has sat by his wife's bedside and taken extensive notes on what time will be the best time to plant her garden this spring, how to prune the fruit trees and how to make sure he's still setting aside enough of their income for a monthly tithe.

The couple have one daughter together, not-quite-2-year-old Indiana, and Rory has two daughters, Heidi, 29, and Hopie, 27, that Joey has helped raise since the couple married.

"Though Joey didn't come into their lives until they were teenagers, my girls love her as their mother and she loves them as her own," he shares. "They also love their baby sister so much, and they hurt for her and all that Joey is going to miss as she grows up. They have made many trips here from home in Tennessee just to be close to us, spend time with Indy and love on Joey."

The family had been hoping for a miracle, but Rory recently acknowledged for the first time that he knows his wife is going to die. He tells People that they have done everything they can to make the best of the time they have.

"We are surrounded by Joey's family here in Indiana and life is a revolving door of sisters, parents and nieces and nephews — all pouring love and time into Joey and our little family," he says. "Though the situation and conditions that brought us here are very difficult, it has been a really beautiful time for Joey and all of us. Not hardly an hour of the day goes by without someone telling someone else that they love them. It's hard to ask for more than that."
