A traffic stop for a broken light lead to Casper Police arresting a man and a woman for felony possession of methamphetamine early Thursday, according to affidavits filed with Natrona County Circuit Court.

An officer was patrolling the neighborhood of East A and North Jackson streets at 2:48 a.m. when he observed a pickup leaving the area, according to the affidavit.

The officer followed the pickup as it entered the southbound lane of Interstate 25, noticed the light was out over the license plate, and pulled over the pickup.

The officer spoke with the driver, Heath Branson and the passenger Aloh Pettyjohn.

Branson said he didn't know the light was out and couldn't find his insurance paperwork. Branson also told the officer that Pettyjohn was a traveling nurse and they were on their way to see a patient. However, the officer didn't see any medical equipment in the pickup.

The officer told him they had left an area known for drug trafficking and asked if he had any drugs. Branson responded that he didn't think there were any drugs in the pickup.

The officer gave Branson a warning about the broken light and told him he was free to go, but then asked if he could search the pickup. Branson agreed to a search and he asked Pettyjohn to exit the pickup.

The officer then asked Branson if he could search his person, adding Branson was not under arrest. Branson put his hands behind his back, and the officer noticed he was clutching something in his right hand. When Branson opened his hand, the officer saw a blue metal tube, looked inside, and saw a white crystalline power and probably methamphetamine. The officer handcuffed Branson and placed him in the patrol vehicle.

The officer then told Pettyjohn he believed she was lying because he found no medical equipment.

He asked her if she had any drugs concealed on her person, and she said no.

But he saw a black cloth bag protruding from a hole in her jeans near her right froth thigh. He pulled out the two plastic baggies of meth totaling 6.96 grams (about a fourth of an ounce) and three glass meth pipes. Pettyjohn then told the officer she had a scale hidden near her crotch and another a scale in her left pant leg.

"(The officer) shook the scale out of Pettyjohn's pant leg, and later had (another officer) retrieve the scale from Pettyjohn's crotch area," according to the affidavit.

After being read their rights, Benson and Pettyjohn said Benson bought the meth for $350 before they were stopped by the officer. They also said they had snorted lines of meth before driving.

They were charged with felony possession of more than three grams of a controlled substance and booked into the Natrona County Detention Center.
