Summer ‘Lunch and Learn’ at Fort Caspar

Fort Caspar Museum and its support group, the Fort Caspar Museum Association, are hosting a Lunch & Learn at the Museum on Saturday, June 9th, from noon until 2:00pm.

Lee M. Cullimore will discuss his new book, The Boys of Company K: Ohio Cavalry Soldiers in the West During the Civil War (High Plains Press, 2012; $18.95). Book sales and signing will follow the Lunch & Learn Program.

Mr. Cullimore has a varied background, beginning with journalism studies at both Lincoln University and the University of Missouri. He has held careers as a writer, editor, and publisher of magazines; a radio program producer; and the Communications and Public Relations Director—and eventually the Executive Director—of the American Water Ski Association. Now retired, Cullimore combines his training and experience as a researcher and journalist with a lifelong interest in American history, particularly the expansionist period from 1812 to the beginning of the twentieth century.

In The Boys of Company K, Cullimore focuses on the soldiers who volunteered to fight the Civil War but ended up building and manning remote outposts and guarding the trails and telegraph lines on the isolated Western Frontier. These ordinary men and boys served the nation in the West, but their contribution to the preservation of the Union was overshadowed by events in the East. Cullimore uses letters and diaries to relate their experiences of boredom, violence, extremes in weather, lack of training and supplies, and loneliness.

Lunch will begin at noon. By popular demand, our menu again will feature a buffet of fried chicken and sides, bread, desserts, and beverages with an RSVP. The cost for lunch is $5 for museum members and $8 for non-members, payable at the door. The lecture begins after lunch at 1:00 pm and is open to the public. Visitors who choose not to join us for lunch may attend the lecture with paid museum admission of $3.00 (or free for FCMA Members). Please call 235-8462 to RSVP for both the luncheon and/or the lecture by Wednesday, June 6th.

Admission to Fort Caspar Museum is $3.00 for adults; $2.00 for youth (ages 13-18 years); and FREE for children (12 years and younger). In May, the Museum is open daily 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, and from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm daily in June through August.
