Fire crews out of Washington and Oregon took over management of a fire burning north of Newcastle Monday morning. The Oil Creek fire was last assessed at 3100 acres on Sunday, but Fire Information Officer, Chuck Turley, says the fire grew significantly in the last 24 hours with prevailing winds pushing the fire north and away from town.

“We do know it grew quite a bit last night, but the smoke has been so heavy and so low this morning we haven’t been able to do a flight to update the fire perimeters.”

Turley says the fire is on BLM, private, and state land. He says 20 homes have been evacuated and the 160 type two personnel, backed by several aircraft, are hoping to identify trigger points that could lead to further evacuations. More fire personnel are expected to arrive through the day.

Turley says the out-of-state firefighting team will get fire details listed on the local INCIweb within the next 24 hour.

The contact number for fire information on the Oil Creek fire is 360 827 1931.
