Wyoming Medical Center Records Breached
CASPER, Wyo. (AP) — About 3,200 patients may be affected after two Wyoming Medical Center employees fell for phishing schemes, compromising their emails.
Wyoming Medical Center sent letters on Wednesday to the potentially affected patients.
Phishing emails are scams that attempt to acquire sensitive information such as usernames, passwords and credit card information from what appear to be legitimate sources. The two employees opened the emails in late February.
The culprits behind the phishing scam had access to the employees' emails for 15 minutes. Hospital officials say no evidence indicates patients' health information was viewed or copied from the compromised email accounts, and the hospital believes that no information was viewed.
The email system contained patient names, medical record numbers, account numbers, birth dates and some medical information.
