Wyoming Unemployment Rates Down almost 1% from Last Year

Wyoming is faring better than the national average for unemployment in the latest report. 

The Wyoming Department of Workforce Services released employment data for the month of August 2023, showing a 2.9 percent unemployment rate, which is lower than the national average of 3.8 percent.

In August of 2022, Wyoming’s unemployment was at 3.7 percent. In the last year, unemployment fell in every county in the state, with Crook County showing the biggest decline in unemployment, down from 4 percent to 2.3 percent.

Teton County had the lowest unemployment in the state in August, at 1.5 percent. Converse, Niobrara, and Weston Counties followed, each reporting a 2.2 percent unemployment rate. 

Wyoming’s nonfarm employment increased by 8,300 jobs in the last year. 

In Albany County, 530 people are listed as unemployed, down from 656 last August. Last August, Albany County’s unemployment rate was 3.2 percent; last month it was recorded at 2.5 percent. 

The highest unemployment rates were found in Fremont County (3.3 percent), Big Horn, and Sweetwater Counties, both at 3.2 percent. 

Nationally, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reported a nonfarm employment increase of 187,000 jobs.

Among the major worker groups, the unemployment rates rose in August: Adult men (3.7 percent), Whites (3.4 percent), and Asians (3.1 percent) rose in August. 

The jobless rates for adult women (3.2 percent), teenagers (12.2 percent), Blacks (5.3 percent), and Hispanics (4.9 percent) showed little change over the month.

Healthcare added 71,000 jobs in August, and Transportation and warehousing lost 34,000 jobs last month.
