Special Light Goose Hunt Opens February 23rd
Hunters who don’t want to put up their shotguns just yet might wish to take advantage of the special light goose season granted under the Light Goose Conservation Order. The season opens in Central Flyway portion of Wyoming on Feb. 23 and runs through Apr.12.
Light geese allowed to be taken under the Conservation Order include the snow, blue, and Ross’ goose. Game and Fish waterfowl biologist Larry Roberts said the hunting for light geese can be hit and miss as to finding a reliable location.
“Sometimes hunters will catch things just right and do very well, but, they may return the next day and find the geese have left.”
For those hunters wanting to give it a try, Roberts suggested some of the Game and Fish habitat management areas in Goshen County.
“Hunters may also be able to find landowners that will grant permission,”
Hunting regulations during the special Light Goose Conservation Order are much more liberal than during the regular waterfowl seasons. Recorded or electronic calls may be used and the bag limit is 20 per day with an unrestricted possession limit. License requirements include a Wyoming Game Bird License, Conservation Stamp and a Conservation Order Special Management Permit. The migratory bird stamp (duck stamp) and Harvest Information Program (HIP) permits are not required for the Conservation Order hunt.
