The Wyoming Cowboys failed to capitalize on four Iowa turnovers and lost to the Hawkeyes 24-3 in the season opener for both Saturday in Iowa City.

The Pokes lead 3-0 early in the second quarter, but Iowa rallied for a 14-3 advantage by halftime. They stretched it to 21-3 midway through the third before a field goal halfway through the fourth quarter provided the final margin.

Josh Allen was 23-of-40 passing, but for only 174 yards and threw two interceptions. The Cowboys inability to run the ball showed, as they were limited to 59 yards on the ground.

Despite recovering three fumbles and snagging an interception on a tipped pass, UW never reached the red zone. Their only points came from sophomore kicker Cooper Rothe's career-long 49-yard field goal early in the second quarter.

Iowa QB Nate Stanley overcame three turnovers with three TD passes. Two went to tight end Noah Fant. The first for two yards and the second from 27 yards out right before halftime. Stanley’s third was a 45-yarder to Nick Easley.

Akrum Wadley added 116 yards rushing for the Hawkeyes.

The Pokes return to Laramie for their home debut against the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs. It’s the first of four straight at home in September. Kick-off is at 2 p.m.
