‘Amazing Spider-Man’ Confirmed as First Part of a Planned Trilogy
The official Facebook page for Marc Webb’s ‘The Amazing Spider-Man’ celebrated the film’s release with some choice words about the movie’s place in a larger picture. Was it a typo? Wishful thinking? Or confirmation that we’re getting at least one more Spidey film (and possibly two more)?
In the most recent post, the Sony Pictures webmaster (no pun intended) for the ‘Amazing Spider-Man’ page claimed:
The Amazing Spider-Man is the first installment in a movie trilogy that will explore how our fave hero’s journey was shaped by the disappearance of his parents.
This much seems somewhat obvious, though this is the first time we’re seeing the word “trilogy” on an official ‘Spider-Man’ page. Was it a mistake? Or a quiet confirmation of what we already suspected? (Still a ballsy move considering the first film hasn’t yet opened and could theoretically go the way of ‘Green Lantern’…)
Once you see Webb’s chapter, you’ll realize that it’s very clearly laying a foundation for future chapters. And as we reported earlier, a planned sequel already has a May 2014 release date, with rewrites being conducted by Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci. Are they writing it with plans of setting up a concluding third chapter?
Three seems to be the magic number for superhero franchises nowadays. Obviously, we’re all bracing for Christopher Nolan’s third Batman film, the concluding ‘The Dark Knight Rises.’ Could Spidey get his own (second) trilogy of films?
Obviously, this weekend’s box office will tell the real tale. If audiences avoid this rebooted ‘Spider-Man’ film, expect Sony to rethink their plans for future installments. But as of now, it’s sounding like the studio is thinking of producing at least two more Spider-Man movies. What do you think?
