If you have always wanted to go big on a train ride, this is going to be the best opportunity available to you in Colorado as you have the chance to ride behind the world's largest steam locomotive at the end of July.

The Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive will be making a one-way excursion from Denver to Cheyenne on July 30, 2022. The train ride is part of the annual gala fundraiser for the Union Pacific Museum.

Tickets for this exclusive ride are going to cost you a pretty penny too. Currently, there are only three options left for the one-way train ride.

  • Classic Dome - $1,100 per ticket
  • Premium Dome Dining Experience - $1,200 per ticket
  • Premium Diner - $750 per ticket

No passengers under the age of 18 will be admitted on the train ride. Union Pacific states that if you arrive with a child under the age of 18, your party will not be allowed on to the train. Return transportation via bus is included with the train excursion.

Big Boy No. 4014 Locomotive Facts

The world's largest steam locomotive was delivered to Union Pacific in December 1941 and was in service until 1961. The locomotive traveled over one million miles in its 20 years of service.

In 2013, Union Pacific reacquired Big Boy No. 4014 and transported the locomotive to Cheyenne, Wyoming and the six-year restoration process began.

The Big Boy No. 4014 steam locomotive weighs 1.2 million pounds and is 133 feet long... More than half the length of a Boeing 747 Jet. Other specs of the Big Boy No. 4014 locomotive include:

  • 56,000-pound coal capacity
  • 25,000 gallon capacity of water for steam generation
  • 5,889 square feet of evaporating surfaces
