On Monday, October 8, 2012, at approximately 4:33 p.m., the Cody Police Department
received a report from an 11 year old that her friend, Katelynn Groves, 11 , had gotten
into a white vehicle with a gentleman, approximately 45 minutes before, at the Park County
Complex, 1501 Stampede Avenue, Cody, to help find his dog and has not returned.
When officers arrived at the Park County Complex, they learned that Katelynn and two
friends were standing outside the front of the Park County Complex when a male pulled up to
the front sidewalk in a vehicle, exited the vehicle, approached the girls and stated that he was
missing his black lab puppy and asked if they could help him find it. Katelynn stated that she
would help him and entered the front passenger side of the vehicle. The vehicle then left the
scene heading westbound toward the Paul Stock Recreation Center.
The suspect vehicle is described as a white SUV, possibly a suburban, with 2 seats up front
and the back compartment area open with a mattress on the floor. Information reported is that
it appears that the subject may possibly be living out of the vehicle. At this time, there is no
information available as to a possible license plate. The vehicle is described as having a black
and red backpack tied to a roof rack and having a package of bottled water strapped / tied to
both the top of the vehicle and the backpack.
The suspect is described as a white male, approximately 55-60, 185-200 lbs, short
strawberry blonde hair or white hair, neatly trimmed strawberry blonde or white mustache or
beard, and was wearing a brown shirt, blue jeans, tan baseball styled cap.
At approximately 6:43 p.m., an Amber Alert was activated for Katelynn.
At approximately 8:15 p.m., the Park County Dispatch Center received a report of an 11 year
old female walking down Spirit Mountain Road (also known as the Carter Mountain Access
Road), which is located off the South Fork road (State Highway 291) just outside Cody.
Shortly thereafter, it was confirmed that the found female was Katelynn Groves.
Katelynn reported that when she approached the suspect vehicle, the suspect brandished a
”pistol” and directed her to get into the front passenger seat of his vehicle.
The suspect then drove the victim onto Carter Mountain where he sexually assaulted her.
Upon her release by the suspect, she began walking down the road until she was picked up by
a party of hunters hunting in the area.
At this time, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Wyoming Division of Criminal
Investigation have been called into assist with the investigation.
Due to the Carter Mountain area being a common area for hunters this time of year, the Cody
Police Department is seeking any information from hunters that have been hunting in the area
recently that may be able to provide information on possible leads.
If you have any information that may assist in helping to identify and/or locate the suspect,
we ask that you contact the Cody Police Department at 307-527-8700.
At this time, this investigation is on-going.
