‘Constantine’ TV Series: NBC Conjures DC’s latest TV Superhero
Late the other night we were shocked to learn that Warner Bros. and DC Comics had successfully negotiated the Batman prequel spinoff series 'Gotham' for a FOX order, compounding the existence of The CW's 'Arrow' and its potential 'Flash' spinoff, but it seems they weren't quite through yet. Classic DC supernatural hero John Constantine will conjure up his own NBC series as well, produced by David S. Goyer!
Most will remember the lukewarm reception of Keanu Reeves' modified feature take on the character, while the new 'Constantine' will be written and executive produced by 'The Mentalist' executive producer Daniel Cerone along with DC's go-to feature writer Goyer, who himself has worked on everything from Christopher Nolan's 'Dark Knight' trilogy to 'Man of Steel' and its impending sequel 'Batman Vs. Superman.'
It remains to be seen if NBC will borrow any changes from Reeves' Americanized version of the character, but the original John Constantine first appeared in 1985, created by Alan Moore, Steve Bissette and Jamie Delano. Blond, British, and sporting a chain-smoking appearance likened to Police frontman Sting, the original DC Constantine began as a mysterious and irreverent con man who becomes a supernatural detective and ends up defending the human race against dark and occult forces from the beyond.
Few other details of NBC's 'Constantine' have been made public for the moment, though it seems safe to say that Warner Bros. and DC have an aim to dominate the TV market where Marvel's 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.' made an impressive splash this past Tuesday.
