Crimestoppers: Casper Police Tips For A Safe Holiday Season
The Holiday season is generally a time of good will, but Casper Police warn there are thieves that will take advantage of the hustle and bustle to make your holiday a lot less bright.
Shoppers are a prime target, said Detective John Hatcher, who said thieves have been known make off with packages that have been delivered to your front door. Hatcher said you might consider having your online purchases delivered to your workplace instead. "See if your boss will allow you to have it delivered there," he suggested. "If they won't see if a neighbor can pick it up for you or if all that fails, make sure they have to sign, you have to sign before that package is dropped off."
If you're out and about with your shopping and leaving purchases in your vehicle, be sure they're locked up out of sight, preferably in your trunk. Hatcher also says folks should avoid overloading themselves with a lot of packages. "That makes you a prime victim to have someone come in an attack you because you cannot defend yourself," he said. Take extra trips or use a cart if you can.
Another shopping tip, don't leave your purse or other valuables unattended in the cart while you shop, for any length of time. It only takes a moment of inattention for things to disappear.
At home, Hatcher says you should keep your residence locked at all times. Those would-be thieves may have seen all the lovely presents under your tree through the windows.
And if you're taking a holiday trip, resist the urge to advertise your adventures on Facebook or other social media. The wrong people could be watching your photos from the beach. "We always think it's just friends out there but the bad guys over the years have found that social media is a great place that they can prey on you."
