MOTEL. That word is short for Motor Hotel.

They are something very American. Invented back when the first paved roads across the United States began to ferry adventurers on vacation.

To be clear, what I mean by "MOTEL" is a place that is along the highway, and motorists traveling cross country will stop at for the night to catch a few hours of sleep.

Some places claim to be MOTELS but they are more like HOTELS. I know I'm being picky here.

Like the old live commercial from singer Dina Shore, "See the USA in your Chevrolet."

But people traveling cross country will need places to stay along the way.

Leave it to Americans to come up with a way to make a living off of it. THE TRAVELERS MOTOR HOTEL. Or, the MOTEL.

But who invented it, and where was the first actual motel in America?
