Ethan Drewes No Longer With Wyoming Football Program

LARAMIE -- Wyoming's offensive line depth just took another hit.

A school official Tuesday confirmed Ethan Drewes is no longer with the football program, instead choosing to focus on law school in Laramie. The 6-foot-3, 278-pound Longmont, Colo., product made the move from defensive tackle to offensive guard in the offseason.

Drewes was listed as Wes King's backup on the left side on the Cowboys' initial depth chart of the 2023 season.

"It's where I've always wanted to play since I was a kid," Drewes said of UW back in April. "Then that really became a reality with coach (Marty) English ... I called up coach English and decided I was going to walk-on here.

"... I love it here. I think the culture is fantastic."

He has the Steamboat tattoo on his left thigh to prove it.

Drewes spent the first year-plus of his college career at Northern Colorado in Greeley. He said when Ed McCaffrey took over the program in 2020, he didn't "click" with the Bears' new defensive scheme.

The would-be junior appeared in six games for the Cowboys a season ago. With mid-season injuries to starting interior linemen Cole Godbout and Jordan Bertagnole, Drewes got plenty of reps during Wyoming's final two regular-season games.

With 45 seconds remaining on the clock and Boise State attempting to run out the clock in the Cowboys' home finale, Drewes, along with Gavin Meyer and DeVonne Harris, combined to force a George Holani fumble that put Wyoming back in business at the Broncos' 21-yard line, trailing by three.

A JL Skinner interception would end those upset hopes on the very next play.

"That was one I'll remember the rest of my life," Drewes said during spring camp. "We both (Drewes and Meyers) split a double team and just hit him the right way and the ball came out ... I think good things happen to people who play hard."

Admittedly, Drewes said he had plenty on his plate when it came to learning a new position during the offseason. Technique was new. Strength and aggression were not.

Still, law school was the new ultimate goal.

"Originally, my plan was to get a masters in taxation or accounting here and then pass the CPA exam and get licensed as a CPA," Drewes said. "My mom is a pastor and she has a couple of attorneys that go to her church. I talked with them and everything and just decided that law school is kind of the route that I wanted to go with. You know, it's going to be a challenge, but I love challenges. So it's going to be a good time."

Craig Bohl knew he had a bright player on his hands.

"We're well pleased with his switch," Wyoming's head coach said in late April. "He's still not super experienced, but the experience he had over on defense has helped. He's picked up the playbook awfully fast for a short amount of time, which is why I'll probably hire him as my attorney."

With Drewes now out of the mix, these are the linemen listed on the current roster at the guard spot:
