If you're like me, you reach for a cup of coffee to start your day and you'd prefer not to be bothered until you've had that first cup of coffee. If this sound like you, then you might be drinking your coffee wrong.

Studies show that we shouldn't have coffee right after waking up, because that's when our body is producing more of the stress hormone cortisol, and that will make the caffeine we drink less effective.

Research has shown the average person's cortisol levels peak between 8:00 and 9:00 in the morning. Those cortisol levels prevent caffeine from doing its thing and helping us to wake up.

According to these results, we should wait until we get to work and then have our first cup of coffee. Or if you wake up really early, you should wait an hour before reaching for the java.

The good news is you can just keep doing what you're doing, and ignore all this if you want to. Drinking coffee right after you wake up won't kill you.

But drinking coffee or caffeinated drinks while your cortisol levels are up does make you more likely to become addicted to caffeine. Because you'll start needing more and more of it to feel the effects.
