Offensive Woes Cost Cowgirls at Boise State

BOISE, Idaho  – The Wyoming Cowgirls struggled mightily on offense Saturday at Boise State, as the Broncos controlled much of the contest in a 56-42 victory over the Cowgirls.

The 42 points are a season-low for Wyoming.

After Wyoming got a layup on the first possession of the game, the two defenses settled in early to open the game. Boise State led 7-5 at the first media timeout. Out of the timeout, a Marta Savic layup tied things up before the Broncos got five-straight to go back in front. From there, UW would respond with back-to-back hoops of its own to knot it up at 12-12. Boise’s hot start from 3-point range continued to close the quarter though, as it took a 20-12 lead after one.

Things continued to go in Boise State’s favor in the second quarter, as the Cowgirls’ offense struggled to find rhythm. The Broncos led by as many as 13 in the frame and led 34-25 at the half. Wyoming committed nine turnovers in the first 20 minutes while BSU shot 48-percent from the floor.

The third quarter didn’t go any better for the Cowgirls as Boise State came out of the gates still in control. UW trailed by as many as 15 in the quarter. Wyoming trimmed the deficit down to nine halfway through the quarter but couldn’t get it any closer. The score was 46-33 in favor of the Broncos after three.

In the fourth, the string was played out for the rest of the game. Boise State controlled the final 10 minutes as Wyoming went nearly five minutes without scoring to begin the quarter.

Malene Pedersen’s 16 points were a game high. Pedersen shot 6-of-11 from the floor and made a pair of 3-pointers. Off the bench, Savic led Cowgirl reserves with 10 points on 4-for-7 shooting while adding a trio of rebounds.

The Cowgirls shot just 33-percent (16-for-48) from the floor and made 4-of-13 (30.8-percent) from 3-point range. Boise State ended up at just a 40-percent clip overall and also shot 4-for-13 from beyond-the-arc. The Broncos didn’t make a three in the second half. UW’s big bugaboo was turnovers, as it committed 18 for the game, leading to a 14-7 advantage in points off turnovers by Boise.

UW is now off for a week and will return to action next Saturday, February 17 with a trip to Colorado State for round two of the Border War with the Rams.
