That old adage “Don’t ask me, I just work here” certainly applies to the Chick-fil-A controversy, where the fast food chain’s financial support of anti-gay organizations has become a cultural hot topic.

A now-former CFO of a medical manufacturing company in Arizona thought it would be a good idea to berate an employee about the company’s actions, film it and post it online. He lost his job and didn’t spark any sort of change since he was operating at the ground level. The video features a monologue of the man referencing Chick-fil-A’s culture of hate while in the drive-thru. He then engages the employee in a dialogue about the company she works for being  hateful, giving money to “hate groups.”

The employee manages to skirt the issue as best she can. Because that’s probably what she was instructed to do.

“I have to stay neutral on the subject,” she says. “My personal beliefs shouldn’t be in the workplace.” She then points out, “I’m really uncomfortable that you’re videotaping me.” He eventually declares, “I don’t know how you live with yourself and work here. I don’t understand it. This is a horrible corporation with horrible values. You deserve better.”

He maintains that he is heterosexual and that he “can’t stand the hate” and says that he felt he did a good thing.

His employer didn’t agree with him, though, and dismissed him from his job. His company CEO said, “We respect everybody’s ability to share their opinions in the public square and we have a very diverse workforce with a diverse set of opinions. We expect employees to behave in a professional manner that’s commensurate with their positions, and discuss their opinions in a civil fashion. … We thought what he did was inappropriate.”

Meanwhile, a lesbian couple with two daughters has invited Chick-fil-A CEO Dan Cathy to their house for dinner. Marci and Marlysa, who reside near the company’s Atlanta base of operations, even offered to cook chicken for him.

“It’s important that Mr. Cathy meet the people his company is donating millions to stand against,” Marci said.

Something tells us he will send his regrets.
