The Real President Obama Borrowed ‘Key & Peele’s Anger Translator
President Obama has soften shown himself in good spirits with viral content, from Zach Galifianakis’ Between Two Ferns, or amiably meme-ing himself, but the latest bit is good enough to make you angry. Translate that anger with the help of Keegan-Michael Key himself, as Obama borrowed “Luther” for his own version of the famous Key & Peele bit.
Delivering his speech at the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner, Obama recreated the famous Key & Peele sketch by bringing Key in character onstage to translate the anger behind his more nuanced words. The duo managed to hit every topic from CNN’s relentless Ebola coverage, to Hillary Clinton as Khaleesi headed to the throne, and even climate change truthers. On that note at least, Obama didn’t actually need his anger translated.
Of course, not everyone in the room found the bit as funny as others (assuming they’re even aware of Key & Peele), but a standing cheer from Orange is the New Black star Laverne Cox is all the endorsement you’ll ever need. Check out the clip for yourself above, as well as some highlights from SNL star Cecily Strong’s hosting gig.
