‘Stamp Out Hunger’ With Casper Letter Carriers
Your local letter carriers will be doing more than delivering the mail this Saturday, they'll be helping to feed the hungry in the community. The 26th Annual "Stamp Out Hunger" food drive is May 12th, and the United States Postal Service is asking that you bag up some food donations and leave them by the mailbox for the carriers to pick up for distribution to local food banks.
Organizers say this is an important time of year for the drive, as food donations from the Holidays are dwindling or gone, and it's nearing the end of the school year. "Kids from school during the summer, they need the food because a lot of parents really depend on that low income discount from the schools, says USPS Letter Carrier Danni Cardinal. "And the senior citizens, sometimes it's a tough decision between foods and your medication. So that's the kind of thing that we want people to understand, that this is very important to our community."
Last year, the letter carriers collected 28,500 pounds of food, and it all stays in the community. Just gather your non-perishable food items such as canned goods, peanut butter, pastas, and cereals (no glass, please) and leave them by your mailbox on Saturday, May 12th. If you're raiding your pantry for the goods, please check the expiration dates.
