The days are getting longer and spring will soon be here!  With the pending arrival of spring, you might be wondering - When Does Daylight Savings Time begin?

The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extended Daylight Saving Time in the U.S. beginning in 2007, though Congress retained the right to revert the law should the change prove unpopular or if energy savings are not significant. Going from 2007 forward, Daylight Saving Time in the U.S.A. is as follows:

  • begins at 2:00 a.m. on the second Sunday of March and
  • ends at 2:00 a.m. on the first Sunday of November

Daylight Savings Time for 2013 begins on Sunday, March 10th at 2 AM and will end on Sunday, November 3rd at 2 AM.


There have been many studies surrounding Daylight Savings Time with regard to human health and how the time change affects us all.  In fact, the number of heart attacks will jump 10 percent on the Sunday time shifts forward and the corresponding Monday.

Scientists believe the increase in heart attacks is due to sleep deprivation and stress caused by your body's internal clock being forced to skip an hour.

You can give your heart the best chance to survive this trauma by eating a good breakfast, exercising and enjoying the early morning sunshine.

In the fall, our bodies adjust to the end of Daylight Savings Time much better than the beginning because it’s always easier to absorb an hour more of sleep than deal with an hour less.

Researchers recommend that people work to improve their sleep habits and get more, better rested sleep.  Especially around the start of Daylight Savings Time when our bodies are upended the most with the shocking shift in our internal clocks and lives.
