I feel like I mention Wyoming's strong art scene often, and there's good reason for it. Wyoming's passion for the arts is broad, encompassing painting, drawing, sculpture, music, and film, all of which are well represented in the state.

This Thursday, the film side of Wyoming's art scene will be on display in Laramie during the UW Haub School's 5th Annual Wild and Working Lands Film Festival. The festival explores the intricate connections between humans and the landscapes where we dwell, work, and play.

Doors open March 26, at 6:30 p.m., and films begin at 7 p.m. at the Gryphon Theatre, 710 E. Garfield St. The festival is presented by the University of Wyoming Haub School of Environment and Natural Resources

The festival will focus on helping the audience better understand the work being displayed, and on how people and the natural environment can work better together. Festival Director Anastasia Brady shares her hope for the future.

Hope that the event will bring audiences closer to the stories unfolding across the West, where landscapes, livelihoods, and traditions remain deeply intertwined. The films showcase the deep and enduring connection between people and the land. The Wild and Working Lands Film Festival aims to foster a shared understanding of today’s environmental challenges while inspiring a future in which both human and natural communities can thrive—told through the powerful medium of film.

The films this year cover topics like:

  • Wetland restoration in Montana
  • Innovative agriculture practices.
  • Long-standing traditions of nomadic sheepherders in Nevada.
  • Indigenous generational knowledge.
  • Sustainable hunting practices in Wyoming.
  • The human connection to Yellowstone National Park.
  • The fragile ecosystems of saline lakes.
