Wyoming Authorities Identify Man Killed in Snowmobile Crash
A Ten Sleep man was killed Sunday afternoon after being thrown from his snowmobile about 22 miles east of Moran Junction.
Gerald Walters, 74, died shortly before 2:30 p.m. on US Highway 26, according to a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
Walters was riding a 2007 Polaris RMK600 snowmobile in the snow flats on top of Togwotee pass, the patrol says. Evidence on the scene led troopers to believe Walters didn't realize he was approaching the highway and drove off the 10-foot snow embankment onto the highway.
He was reportedly thrown from the snowmobile and died at the scene, despite wearing a helmet.
Troopers are investigating Walters' unfamiliarity with the area as the contributing factor in the crash.
Walters was the 14th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2017. The same time period in 2016 saw 10 highway deaths statewide.
