Bug season is coming, and if the thought of a spider, gnat, mosquito, or some other nasty bug crawling on you makes you cringe, I hope you're ready. April is usually the month when pesky mosquitos start to become active.

Just like bears, Wyoming mosquitoes hibernate. Their bodies go into a mode called diapause, where they slow down and remain in that state until the weather warms up and there's enough water.

Once the temperatures stay consistently in the 50s, they'll buzz around your ears, into your nose & mouth, and annoy you.

How do you keep the bugs away, you ask?

I found six interesting hacks that may be helpful for you, and a couple of them I would've never thought to use.

  • WD40 around windows to keep bugs out?
  • Burn coffee grounds and lighter fluid in a fireproof pan or sprinkle coffee on your campfire to keep mosquitoes away.
  • Sprinkle Irish Spring Soap shavings to keep flies and spiders away?
  • Can salt in your garbage keep maggots and flies out?
  • Do you think sprinkling cinnamon into your sandbox will keep bugs out?
  • Will applying peppermint oil on your clothes make the bugs leave you alone?

I've never really heard of those hacks, but shoot, it may be worth the time and effort to see if they work.

No matter which hack you use, you should start preparing for the summer bug issues in Wyoming.

Bug spray, sunscreen, and water are three essentials you should always carry in your Wyoming survival bag.
