Wyoming Man Dies After Crash; Medical Condition Possible Factor
A Wyoming man died Wednesday after losing control of his vehicle on Interstate 80, and state troopers say a possible medical condition may have played a role in the crash.
Randall Miller, 59, died as he was being flown to the University of Utah Medical Center, according to a crash report from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.
The crash occurred shortly before 11 a.m. near milepost 97 outside of Rock Springs. Miller was driving a Chevrolet Malibu eastbound in the left lane when he lost control, swerved into the righthand lane, and then hit the guardrail on a bridge deck.
The Malibu spun across both lanes, striking the left rear portion of a commercial truck trailer, then hit the lefthand guardrail and came to rest in the eastbound lane.
"An unidentified witness who left the scene before law enforcement arrival noted that [the] Malibu driver was equipped with a portable oxygen unit with a nasal cannula," the report reads in part. "It was allegedly noted that the driver was wearing the nasal cannula, but the oxygen was not turned on. The witness turned on the oxygen before leaving the scene."
When first responders arrived, Miller was alive but unresponsive. He suffered substantial chest and head trauma during the crash.
He was taken from the scene via ground ambulance to Memorial Hospital of Sweetwater County. Then, he was put aboard an air ambulance headed for Utah, but died before the aircraft could get him to the second hospital.
The driver of the commercial truck was not injured.
A possible medical condition is listed as a potential contributing factor in the crash report.
The road surface was dry and weather was clear at the time of the wreck.
