2 Injured in Crash That Closed Highway 59 Thursday North of Douglas

Two people were injured, one of them seriously, in a two-vehicle crash that closed a highway north of Douglas for several hours Thursday evening.

That crash occurred when a sand truck failed to stop at a stop sign at the intersection of Walker Road and Highway 59. That commercial vehicle then hit a water truck that was traveling at highway speeds on Highway 59.

Following the t-bone style collision, the male driver of the water truck was treated and released from a local hospital.

The male driver of the sand truck was flown to a hospital in Colorado with serious injuries, including multiple lacerations and internal organ damage, according to Wyoming Highway Patrol Lt. Randy Starkey.

The sand truck driver will be issued a citation for failure to stop at a stop sign, Starkey told K2 Radio News on Friday. He did not have the names of the drivers involved.

With increased travel on state highways during the holiday season and the sometimes heightened stress of such travel, Starkey urged drivers to slow down, drive defensively and give themselves extra time to reach their destination on schedule.
