Thanks to the Center for Disease Control's nearly obsessive collection of data, we can see statistically the most common cause of death in the Cowboy State. Even which day someone is most likely to die. These numbers were collected from Census Data from 1999 to 2017.

Overall, Wyoming followed the national averages. Like most of the country, heart disease is the most common way someone dies. Looking specifically at Wyoming, here are the top 10 causes of death using the "Injury Mechanism & All Other Leading Causes" via the CDC WONDER Search.

  1. Heart Disease
  2. Cancer
  3. Lower Respiratory Disease
  4. Cardiovascular Disease including Strokes
  5. Alzheimer's
  6. Auto Accidents
  7. Diabetes
  8. Phenomena or Influenza
  9. Firearm
  10. Poison

The CDC also collects data on the intent of death. This separates the accidents from natural deaths to even suicides and homicides. In Wyoming, these numbers are from data of all 82,000 deaths from 1999 to 2017.

Underlying Cause of Death (Injury Intent) via CDC WONDER Search

  • Unintentional - 5,913 deaths
  • Suicide - 2,249 deaths
  • Homicide - 320 deaths

It is no doubt that drugs and alcohol can be fatal. Wyoming like every state has there issues, but here are the cold hard facts. In the last 18 years, there have been over 1100 overdoses whether suicide or unintentional. If you combine all drug and alcohol-induced causes, Wyoming has lost nearly 3000 people.

Looking deeper into the database from the CDC, we can see which day of the week more people have died. The most "popular" day is Saturday followed closely by Monday, but really the numbers are too close to make an accurate picture.

  1. Saturday with 11,974 deaths in the last 18 years.
  2. Monday with 11,846 deaths in the last 18 years.
  3. Friday with 11,809 deaths in the last 18 years.
  4. Sunday with 11,723 deaths in the last 18 years.
  5. Tuesday with 11,714 deaths in the last 18 years.
  6. Thursday with 11,663 deaths in the last 18 years.
