Colorado Woman Who Gave Birth Alone in Jail is Suing Denver
A woman who was forced to give birth alone in a jail cell is suing the city of Denver after she was ignored for five hours while in labor.
Video shows Diana Sanchez crying in pain before she takes her pants off and delivers a baby boy.
Sanchez has filed a lawsuit alleging that the jail chose convenience over compassion while she was in pain and giving birth. Her lawyer says nobody helped when her water broke, and she was bleeding right next to a toilet in the jail cell.
After the baby was born, things just got worse. The lawsuit says that the jail was not prepared for a birth. The baby was not warmed, dried, and they had no way to cut the umbilical cord. As a matter of fact, the cord was cut about 15 minutes later by the fire department.
A statement from the Denver County Sheriffs Department says that they have changed their police to "ensure that pregnant inmates who are in any stage of labor are immediately taken to the hospital."
