Cowgirls Off to Fast Start at Mountain West Championships

HOUSTON, Texas - The Wyoming Cowgirls got off to a fast start on the opening day of the Mountain West Championship in CRWC Natatorium in Houston, Texas on Wednesday.
Wyoming set a school record winning the 800-yard freestyle, a mark which is the sixth fastest in MW history. The Cowgirls are in second place after the opening day.
“It was obviously a fantastic night, our swimmers performed very well, and our divers did a nice job and those were big points for us,” UW head coach Dave Denniston said. “Freshman Tara Joyce was a great decision, and she pretty much dominated the field in the first 100 helping us win a relay in the Mountain West for the first time in a while. It’s a great way to start to meet. The energy and everything has been really high and it was super fun night and look forward to continue competing.”
The team of Carly Palmer, Kali Franckowiak, Maisyn Klimczak and Tara Joyce touched with a school record time of 7:11.15 passing the mark set in 2013 by over four seconds. Joyce went 1:45.74 to seal the win for the Brown and Gold.
The Cowgirls opened the night with a fourth-place finish in the 200-medley relay with a time of 1:39.90. The team of Emily Giles, Carly Palmer, Tessa Bendokas and Lauren Swartz cut nearly two seconds off their seeded time.
In the diving portion, Nettie Knapton finished ninth with a score of 267.85 for 20 team points. Alicia Gonzalez finished 11th with a score of 258.20.90 adding 16 team points for the Brown and Gold.
San Diego State is in first place after the first day with 196 points. The Cowgirls are second with 152 points and Nevada is third with 151 points. UNLV is in fourth with 144 points with Air Force sitting in fifth place.
The Mountain West Championship continues tomorrow morning and continues through Saturday.
