Cowgirls Split on Day One at Hurricane Invite

TULSA, Okla., -- The Wyoming Cowgirls continued their busy week to open 2024 with a pair of matchups Saturday against Louisiana Tech and Omaha at the Tulsa Hurricane Invitational.

The Cowgirls lost a hard-fought contest to begin play, 4-3 to Louisiana Tech. Although the match against Omaha will conclude Sunday with the double portion of the match, Wyoming has already clinched its first win of the season behind the strength of a 5-1 effort in singles play against the Mavericks.

The difference in the match against LTU was doubles play, as Louisiana Tech jumped out to an early 1-0 lead by taking the doubles point. Violetta Borodina and Sophie Zehender won 6-3 at the No. 1 spot to earn the Cowgirls’ lone win in doubles action. Doubles came down to the third spot, as LTU pulled out a 7-6 victory.

In singles against the Bulldogs, UW got three wins. Zehender got a straight-set 6-0 and 6-2 win at the No. 2 spot to get the Brown & Gold on the board. Noesjka Brink pulled out a 7-6, 6-2 win at the third singles position while at the No. 5 spot, Jeselle Ante pulled off a three-set thriller in a marathon match, winning at the six spot, 7-6, 5-7 and 7-5.

Against Omaha, the Cowgirls won five of six matches in singles play. Zehender made it a 2-0 day as she won in three, 4-6, 6-4 and 6-1 at the first position. Borodina won at No. 2, 6-3, 3-6, 6-1. Positions four through six were all straight-set victories for UW against Omaha. Nikol Dobrilova won 6-2 and 6-3 at No. 4. Ante was victorious 6-0 and 6-3 at the fifth position while at No. 6, Lucia Malinak prevailed 7-5, 6-2.

Wyoming closes the Hurricane Invite tomorrow against the host, Tulsa. Before that match, the Cowgirls will play doubles against Omaha to officially close-out that matchup.
