See The”Devil Comet” As It Passes Over Wyoming

A two-tailed comet is streaking above Wyoming.

Well, sure, and the rest of the world too, but anyway.

This one has two tails and is green

It's officially called 12P/Pons-Brooks and was first seen way back in 1812 by French astronomer Jean-Louis Pons.

The last time it flew by Earth was in 1954.

This comet will be visible from mid-March to mid-April.

On April 21st Comet Pons Brooks will make its closest approach to the Sun and will be at its brightest in our night sky.

At that time you'll be able to see it with binoculars.

It's called “Devil Comet” because it's two tails which makes people think of two horns, like the Devil.

Go out with a pair of binoculars and look west.

Wyoming is a wonderful place to see objects in the night sky due to our high altitude, meaning less atmosphere gets in the way and low light pollution.

Many locations in Wyoming are classified as the darkest in North America.

An object like this comet can be faint, so the less human-made light interference the better.

There is a website and an app called Dark Sky Finder that will help you locate the darkest regions in your area.

Wyoming is filled with dark areas that are perfect for star, planet, and comet gazing.

On April 12th the comet will be right by the planet Jupiter just after 8 pm. That should make it easy to find.

The comet will be at its brightest near the end of April, but that also means it will be visible when the Sun is setting, making it a bit of a struggle to see with all that Sunlight.

For those going to see the eclipse, you might be able to see this comet in the middle of the day.
