Cheyenne Mayor Patrick Collins says Wyoming cities, towns, counties, fire districts, and other local governmental entities are breathing a 'sigh of relief'' after a proposal to cut residential property taxes was defeated by voters this week.

Proposition 1 would have offered a property tax exmeption on primary residences in Wyoming of 50 percent. Supporters said it was needed tax releif for Wyoming homeowners and argued local governments would be fine if they would spend more efficently.

Opponents claimed it would hurt public safety and education and might even lead to a Wyoming state income tax to make up for the lost revenues.

It ended up being defeated, with over 105,000 no votes and a little over 80,000 in favor,

Collins wrote the following in his ''Mayoral Minute" column that was published on Friday:

" The voters of Wyoming supported local governments and services by defeating Proposition 1. My friends around the state who run cities, towns, counties, fire districts, and special districts are breathing a sigh of relief. They don’t have to figure out how to run their agencies with huge funding cuts. Property taxes directly support the services all residents of Wyoming rely on each day, including here in Cheyenne and Laramie County.''
