Natrona County and other law enforcement agencies arrested 18 drunk drivers during the New Year's weekend, according to a news release from the Wyoming Department of Transportation.

During the four-day operation from Dec. 29 to Jan 2., officers made 372 traffic stops, issued 15 speeding citations, eight seat belt citations, 125 other citations, and 160 warnings.

There were no traffic fatalities reported in Natrona County.

Participating agencies included the Wyoming Highway Patrol, Casper Police Department, Natrona County Sheriff’s Office, Mills Police Department, Evansville Police Department, the Wyoming Medical Center Injury Prevention Traffic Safety, and WYDOT.

The agencies intend to reduce fatal crashes in the county through enforcement of impaired driving and seat belt laws. The enforcement efforts will be joined by a media campaign that will stress a zero-tolerance stance on impaired driving and lack of seat belt use.

The New Year’s weekend operation marked the first of at least six planned operations in the county this year. The next operation is scheduled for the weekend of the Super Bowl on Feb. 4.

Besides these local efforts, the Wyoming Highway Patrol urges drivers to help keep the state's roads safe by calling the Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately (REDDI) hotline number at (800) 442-9090 to report suspected drunk drivers.

Callers should be prepared to provide the dispatcher with a description of the vehicle, its location and direction of travel.
