A Kansas man died Wednesday following a head-on crash on a highway near Jackson.

Ronald Campbell, 72, of Topeka, Kansas, was driving a 2016 Subaru Forester westbound on US 26/US 287 shortly before 9 a.m. Wednesday. Near milepost nine, the Subaru crossed the centerline and entered the eastbound lane.

The Wyoming Highway Patrol says investigators don't know why the Subaru crossed into oncoming traffic. But when it did, it collided head-on with a 2017 Ford 500.

The Subaru rolled one and a half times before coming to rest on its roof in the westbound lane.

Despite wearing his seat belt, Campbell was pronounced dead at the scene.

A passenger in the Subaru was taken by ambulance to St. John's Medical Center in Jackson, while a helicopter flew the driver of the Ford to a hospital in Idaho Falls, Idaho. Their injuries and conditions are not detailed in a news release from the Wyoming Highway Patrol.

Campbell was the 76th person killed on Wyoming highways in 2017. By this point in 2016, 50 people had perished on highways across the state, compared with 74 deaths in 2015 and 75 fatalities in 2014.
