I was originally going to say this was just my opinion, but now I think I can prove that what I'm about to say is fact. Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the best Thanksgiving movie ever.

In case you're a newborn and/or you just don't get out much, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is a movie that came out in 1987. It starred Steve Martin and John Candy. Steve Martin plays a guy named Neal Page. Neal is away from home in a corporate meeting. John Candy is Del Griffith who is a traveling salesman. They both end up on a flight that is delayed because of weather so they reluctantly team up to try and get home. IMDB gives this simple plot synopsis:

A man must struggle to travel home for Thanksgiving with an obnoxious slob of a shower curtain ring salesman as his only companion.

This movie would have been funny enough with just the slapstick shenanigans of Steve Martin and John Candy alone. But, the reason this movie has remained one of my all-time favorite flicks is it has heart. Loads of heart.

Sure, you get the hilarity of Steve Martin dealing with John Candy's character who is a slob. The scene of him accidentally wiping his face off with John Candy's humongous underwear and waking up together awkwardly in a tiny bed are now famous. But, it's the heart-wrenching reveal at the end that made this movie legendary for me.

Without throwing out a major spoiler for anyone that has somehow not seen this movie yet, suffice it to say that Steve Martin's stuffy character understands the true meaning and value of family when it's all said and done.

Yes, it's silly, sometimes stupid and a tad cheesy at times. But, in my not-so-humble opinion, Planes, Trains and Automobiles is the best Thanksgiving movie ever and no one will ever change my mind.
