Another waste of taxpayer dollars or an investment in education that we the ignorant public just don't understand?   That is the issue in Ashburnham, Massachusetts as the school district decides on whether or not to buy iPads for the kindergarteners of Briggs Elementary.

The idea is for the school district to purchase 150 iPads for children to use in class. Parents would be given the option to lease them for 25 dollars a month for two years. At the end of the two year term, the parents would own them.

Some question if this is the best use of taxpayer money. Catherine Adair has children in school at Briggs Elementary. She tells FOX 25, "We have no Vice Principal. We have a very bare bones staff. I don't think kindergartners having iPads is the best expenditure of taxpayer money."

The superintendent of the district stresses that the funds would come from an already existing account that goes toward leasing desktop computers.

Why not?  Most five-year olds are already experimenting and locking in their favorite tunes on mommy's smartphone.  There's really no denying that these are useful tools.  But does every student need his or her own in a kindergarten class?  These are very expensive toys that will be in the hands of some very uninhibited and perhaps even somewhat, destructive children.  Let's start with two and see how it goes.

What do you think?
