This summer, plenty of country music fans will both remember and mourn the Indiana State Fair tragedy. “He’s got the soul, he’s got the voice and he’s got the emotion,” said Jennifer Nettles of J Rome, her first of two contestants chosen to take the stage with Sugarland‘s leading lady during tonight’s premiere of ‘Duets.’

Through all the media scrutiny surrounding the pending lawsuit against Sugarland, a spark of positivity has surfaced. Nine months after the tragic Indiana State Fair stage collapse, which killed 7 and injured dozens on August 13, 2011, one of the most critically injured concert-goers is preparing to return home after an intense round of rehabilitation.

While it’s possible that Sugarland‘s tour manager resisted delaying the start of the tragic Indiana State Fair show on the band’s behalf last August, the conversation was never relayed to Jennifer Nettles. That’s the crux of a partial transcript of Nettles’s deposition obtained by the Indianapolis Star.

The stage that collapsed moments before Sugarland was due to begin their performance at the Indiana State Fair last year wasn’t strong enough to withstand a 68 MPH gust of wind, as required by code. A 59 MPH gust of wind toppled the light and sound rigging on the night of August 13, but parts of the support system began giving way earlier in the evening.

Lawyers for both sides agreed that Sugarland could give their deposition in lawsuits stemming from last August’s stage collapse at the Indiana State Fair offsite, via video. The band will sit down to record next week in Charleston, W.V.

Tuesday night (March 27), Sugarland took the stage of ABC’s hit dance show ‘Dancing With the Stars.’ But they weren’t there to test out their dance skills on the American public. Instead, the duo offered up two live performances during this week’s results episode, providing the music for dancers to do what they do best.
