Some people think it tastes like Jägermeister, the German liqueur or maybe Ouzo, an anise-flavored aperitif widely enjoyed in Greece. But licorice, tastes like licorice. Not the pansy red vine candy you find readily in most candy sections, but it’s dark and delicious cousin, black licorice.

Made from the root of the Glycyrrhiza glabra plant, many people don’t care for it’s dark and musky flavor. It has it’s place in treatment of a number of physical ailments as medicine, but, there is a danger associated with black licorice, it can make you sick or even kill you.

The FDA says it’s ingredient glycyrrhizin can mess with your potassium levels causing symptoms like increased blood pressure, swelling, lethargy, or even abnormal heart rhythms or congestive heart failure.

“If you’re 40 or older, eating 2 ounces of black licorice a day for at least two weeks could land you in the hospital with an irregular heart rhythm or arrhythmia.”

 

There are other potential problems mentioned in the consumerist.Be careful out there. Maybe keep to the Peanut Butter Cups and Snickers Bars.
