Top 5 Things To Know About The Chanticleers
The Wyoming Cowboys will face Coastal Carolina in the CBI Championship finals this week. Let’s take a look at the Pokes opponent.
One note about these two teams is they both appeared in the 2015 NCAA Tournament. The Cowboys lost to Northern Iowa, while the Chanticleers lost to Wisconsin.

The Nickname/Mascot
A “Chanticleer” is a name given to a rooster, especially in fairy tales. Don’t believe us? Look it up for yourself. It is pronounced "SHON-tuh-clear." The university does have a live rooster that appears at some events. The live mascot is “Maddox.” The athletic mascot is named “Chauncey.”

The University & Town
Coastal Carolina was founded in 1954 as a two-year junior college. It became a four-year institution in 1974. It has an enrollment of over 10,400 students. CCU is part of the Big South Conference. Coastal is located in Conway, S.C., which is one of the oldest towns in South Carolina and was founded in 1732. It’s part of the Myrtle Beach metropolitan area and even includes a Riverwalk.

Connection to Clemson University
Just like Wyoming, the Chanticleers have their own connection to Clemson. Former Cowboys head coach Larry Shyatt was a head coach with the Tigers, and so was current CCU head man Cliff Ellis. He coached at Clemson from 1984-1994. Ellis is in his 10th season as the Chanticleers bench boss. His 713 victories ranks him 20th on the list of all-time career coaching victories in Division 1 basketball.

National Champions
CCU won its only NCAA title in baseball during the 2016 season. The Chanticleers beat Arizona at the College World Series in Omaha, NE. By the way, UW has three NCAA championships. One in hoops (1943) and a pair in skiing (1968 & 1985).

Coastal Carolina has three players that average in double figures. They are led by junior guard Jaylen Shaw. He averages 14.3 points per game, but has poured in 22 per game over the last three. Senior guard Elijah Wilson adds 13.3 points per game. He’s the third leading scorer in CCU history. Their third double figure scorer is senior guard Shivaughn Wiggins, but he’s out with an injury. Junior forward Demario Beck adds 9.8 points and a team-leading 8 rebounds per game. He’s averaging 18 points and 9 rebounds per game during the CBI. The Chanticleers are 14-6 at home, but just 3-10 on the road. They went 2-1 in neutral site games.
