Leaving Wyoming With Your Dog Can Be A Big Problem
When I'm riding with my wife, every time we see a dog with its head poked out of the window or in the back of a pickup truck, she gasps and automatically worries about the pup. She's afraid the dog will get too excited and leap out or get injured somehow.
Allowing your dog to roam freely could cause a dangerous situation that could injure your dog, your family, or other drivers.
I'm not a dog owner, so I had no idea you could not just hop in the truck with your dog and leave the state.
Did you know that some states have laws to keep your dog safe in case of an accident? Yep, doggy seatbelts are a thing, and if you're heading out on vacation and taking Fido, you better check the dog rules for your location.
It is always a good idea to do some research and even consider buying your dog a doggy seatbelt before leaving.
The car rental comparison site DiscoverCars.com has compiled a list of things you must consider before loading Fido up when you leave on vacation.
Important Questions To Consider Before A Doggy Road Trip:
- Are there doggy restrictions or requirements in the states you're going to or driving through?
- The USDA says you should talk to your Veterinarian to determine if there are specific animal health requirements, such as certain vaccines.
- A doggy seatbelt is sometimes required for your pet to be in the car.
- Does an unrestrained animal or animals on your lap fall under 'Distracted Driver Laws?
- If you're renting a hotel, Airbnb, vehicle, or other type of rental, do they allow dogs? If they do, do they require your dog to be in a kennel?
- Is your dog a good travel companion?
If you've never considered a doggy seat belt, here are a couple of videos with good suggestions.
