Wyoming Highway 70 over Battle Pass has reopened for the summer season, the Wyoming Department of Transportation announced Thursday.

According to a department Facebook post, crews started work on the 23-mile stretch in early May, using multiple rotary plows and other heavy equipment to clear large snow drifts, and opened the gates this morning, 12 days ahead of schedule.

"The roadway is clear of drifts, but significant snow melt occurs during the day, which often drains onto or across the road surface," said WYDOT District 1 Maintenance Engineer Tim Morton. "This snow melt freezes at night creating hazardous slick spots, especially in the early morning hours."

WYDOT says it's possible Battle Pass could see more heavy, wet snow this spring, and urges those planning travel on WYO 70 to call 511 or visit wyoroad.info for the latest road conditions before heading out.
