A man was arrested on suspicion of driving while under the influence after he allegedly injured a pedestrian and collided with a vehicle last week in northern Wyoming.

James Schmidt, 67, was arrested May 29 on a misdemeanor DUI charge, according to Lt. Travis Koltiska of the Sheridan Police Department.

Schmidt, through an attorney, filed a written plea of not guilty and was released from custody on an unsecured bond in the amount of $750 pending further court proceedings, according to the Sheridan County Circuit Court.

Police were called to the intersection of South Thurmond and West Heald Streets in the evening hours of May 29 after Schmidt, who was driving a vehicle southbound, allegedly hit the victim, who had been standing at the driver side of their parked vehicle.

In a phone interview Thursday, Koltiska told K2 Radio News that Schmidt later said he had thought he hit the open door of a vehicle. Looking into his rear-view mirror, Schmidt then hit a stopped vehicle at the intersection, Koltiska said.

Koltiska said the victim was taken to Billings, Montana for medical treatment. Information regarding the victim's medical condition was not immediately available.

Trial in the case is set for Oct. 30.
