Do You Have The Proper License To Drive An RV In Wyoming?
Wyoming's highways are extra full this time of year. We're in the midst of travel season, so more families are driving through, the snowbirds are coming home for a few months, and this is all on top of a large number of semi-trucks rolling down the interstates.
Some of the vehicles you're likely seeing are the extremely large RVs. You know, the ones that look like they're carrying a music artist from city to city or a tour group to the different tourist stops.
Driving a setup like this requires a special license for several reasons.
It's a commercial vehicle that's over 26,000 pounds.
You're hauling over 16 passengers.
You're towing 10,000 pounds behind.
What about driving a large motorhome?
In Wyoming, as long as it's a 'recreational vehicle' and not over 26,000 pounds and you're not towing 10,000 pounds, you don't need a special license to drive a large motorhome.
Wyoming is one of 10 states that require a non-commercial special driver's license for certain vehicles.
- A Class B non-commercial license is required if your recreational vehicle is over 26,000 pounds and you're towing under 10,000 pounds.
- A Class A non-commercial license is required if your recreational vehicle is over 26,000 pounds and you're towing over 10,000 pounds.
If you're concerned about the license you'll need to drive your RV across the country, there are two things you can do to avoid issues.
- Keep your vehicle under 26,000 pounds.
- Don't tow anything over 10,000 pounds.
Consulting your local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is an easy way to avoid confusion if you're planning an RV trip.
