Wyoming Classrooms Nurture Trout And Inspire Future Scientists

The program is a partnership among Wyoming Game and Fish, Trout Unlimited, and Wyoming schools to help children understand the science behind raising and releasing fish, thereby contributing to a thriving fish population.
The most recent program began in January when the classrooms received trout eggs from Wyoming hatcheries. During the semester, the children learned about concepts in ecology, population biology, water quality, fish anatomy, and conservation while feeding and caring for the fish as they grew.
Once the fish reached the fingerling stage, the fish were released into designated fisheries statewide.
The program was designed to inspire the next generation of potential conservationists to develop an interest in the outdoors and the possibility of a career in conservation. By participating in the program, students gain a new understanding of local fisheries and the fish that inhabit them, and they receive a hands-on learning opportunity.
According to educators who participated with their students, the program not only created excitement in the students but also in the faculty and parents, who developed a shared interest with the kids.
If you're an educator looking for a way to inspire your students to learn about the science of Wyoming fisheries, Trout in the Classroom is available for students in grades 3 through 12.
To participate in the program, schools must sign up during the fall semester to be ready for January, when the program will begin.
