Wyoming's fishing is top notch and without the hard work of stocking fish, researching and keeping up on the fisheries, Wyoming would just be another place to fish.

Due to all the hard work, Wyoming is THE place to fish. Anglers come from near and far to get the experience that's offered at the fisheries in Wyoming.

Did you know that every year there are about 1.3 million fish raised every year at Dan Speas Fish Hatchery, just outside of Casper? As a matter of fact, Wyoming Game and Fish has 10 hatcheries all over the state, and they all produce from hundreds of thousands to millions of fish every year.

Once the fish are raised to the needed size, they're stocked in waters all over the state, to keep up the state's fishing reputation. Every year there are almost 11 times more fish stocked in Wyoming, than there are people that live in Wyoming.

Now that's a lot of fish.

You may be wondering what types of fish are raised by WGFD, and that's a good question to ask. There are nearly 40 species of fish raised in Wyoming fish hatcheries, crazy ey?

Take a look at all the different species of fish grown in Wyoming

  • Trout (multiple species)
  • Crappie (multiple species)
  • Catfish (multiple species)
  • Perch (multiple species)
  • Walleye
  • Sauger
  • Northern Pike
  • Mountain Whitefish
  • Kokanee Salmon
  • Burbot
  • Grayling
  • Largemouth / Smallmouth Ball
  • Sunfish
  • Tiger Muskie
  • Sturgeon

Once those fish are grown to the size needed, they're then taken to the body of water and transported into their new home. This process is sometimes done by helicopter, for remote waters, but generally the fish are hauled in special trucks. When they arrive to the location, a large tube is hooked to the truck and the fish are released.

The process is really neat to watch, this video was posted on Facebook by the WGFD - Casper region. 750 rainbow trout were stocked in Lake McKenzie and Yesness Pond in Casper, for ice fishing this winter.

Take a look at the video, then check out the video about Dan Speas Hatchery and how the growing process happens. Happy Fishing.
