Well, that didn’t take long! Just days after rumors broke that FOX was ready to greenlight an official X-Files revival with David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson, the truth is officially out there. Mulder and Scully will return for a limited X-Files run on FOX, but what other details can we uncover?

As predicted, the new “short-stack” series will consist of six episodes to begin production this summer, with an eventual airdate yet to be decided. Series creator Chris Carter will return to the helm, while the story itself will pick up some time after 2008 feature The X-Files: I Want to Believe, and presumably tackle the unresolved alien invasion threads (that theoretically passed us by in 2012, according to canon).

Said Carter of the renewal:

I think of it as a 13-year commercial break. The good news is the world has only gotten that much stranger, a perfect time to tell these six stories.

Adds FOX of the announcement:

We had the privilege of working with Chris on all nine seasons of The X-Files – one of the most rewarding creative experiences of our careers – and we couldn’t be more excited to explore that incredible world with him again.

The X-Files was not only a seminal show for both the studio and the network, it was a worldwide phenomenon that shaped pop culture – yet remained a true gem for the legions of fans who embraced it from the beginning. Few shows on television have drawn such dedicated fans as The X-Files, and we’re ecstatic to give them the next thrilling chapter of Mulder and Scully they’ve been waiting for.

As of yet, only Duchovny and Anderson have signed on to reprise their iconic roles, with more announcements likely incoming in the next few weeks. How else should FOX shape The X-Files’ impending return? What other alien conspiracies might we uncover?
