Join The Fun At The Casper Shrine Club’s Vidalia Onion Sale
Stop, it's Vidalia Onion time!
The Casper Shrine Club's annual onion sale is here, and your first chance to get your 10-lb bag is approaching. This year, the club brought in 13,200 pounds of onions to be sold.
The annual fundraiser to help raise money for the Shrine Club will kick off on Saturday, May 10, and run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.
The onion sale is a popular event, and you won't want to miss out on getting your onions. In years past, they've sold over half of their onions on the first day. Make plans to get yours on Saturday.
After kick-off Saturday, you can get your onions at the Casper Shrine Club daily from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 14, in Glenrock from 9-4 (or when sold out) and Douglas from 12 - 6 (or when sold out).
Vidalia Onions are a special variety because they come from a specific region in Georgia. Only onions grown in that region can be called' Vidalia Onions.' Ever since 1990, Vidalias has been the official vegetable in Georgia.
They're sweet, mild, and versatile. The onions can be used for onion rings, onion soup, dip, sandwiches, and desserts. If you're like me, you can just eat them like an apple; they're that sweet and tasty.
When you get them, you'll want to store them properly. If you do this right, you can have amazing Vidalia onions for months.
Keep your onions in cool, dry, ventilated areas:
In refrigerator:
Ensure the onions are dry, then wrap them individually in tissue paper, paper towel, or newspaper before placing them in the cold. Cut onions will be kept for several days if sealed in plastic bags or containers and refrigerated.
In a dry, well-ventilated area:
Place onion in the legs of sheer pantyhose, tie a knot between each onion, and hang it. Cut the knot when you want an onion. Do not wrap the onions in plastic or store them in plastic bags. Lack of air will reduce shelf life.
In Freezer:
Chop the onion and place it on a cookie sheet in the freezer. When frozen, remove it, put it in a freezer bag or container, and seal it. Freezing changes the texture of onions. Frozen onions should be used in cooking only. Whole frozen Vidalia onions can be baked.
